The total spending for existing and future development projects in Queensland's Gold Coast area is currently $6.855 billion, and spending in Southport and the surrounding area's in particular are substantially high because of two of the Gold Coast’s biggest infrastructure projects.
The $1.8 billion Gold Coast Light Rail project,
The $1.76 billion Gold Coast University Hospital,
And there are many more infrastructure projects in the pipeline with the number increasing from 2 this year to hit 13 in the very near future.

Four new infrastructure projects have been added recently including the,
$35 million Griffith University Business School
$20 million Queens Park Tennis Centre upgrade
$10 million Smith Street upgrade
Molendinar to Gaven power network upgrade
The Gold Coast Highway Upgrade

Other Major infrastructure  projects, which have been under way for some time include the,
$201 million upgrade of Olsen Avenue
$150 million Griffith University Health Centre.

Approximately $5.96 billion or around 87% of the total development spending for existing and future projects are situated within the suburb of Southport and planning for the development of the "China Town Precinct" in Southport is well under way and is expected to encourage great interest from the entire local community and tourism combined.
